Welcome to Columbine Area Band and Orchestra
2020-2021

Hello parents, guardians, and fifth grade students! My name is Mr. Eric Whaylen, and I am the band and orchestra teacher for the Columbine Area Elementary Schools. It is a year of questions and uncertainty in what our schools will look like, but I can give you one piece of information with certainty: band and orchestra will be available as electives for your students this year. Much is still unknown, but your fifth grader has the option of studying a band or orchestra instrument and learning the skills needed for instrumental performance and ensemble playing.

The first step in your instrumental music journey will be to select an instrument from the band or orchestra and figuring out how to get it. Watch the following videos with your student and discuss what they think looks like the most fun.

Instrument Video Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-z03i1qJr9q6wdZyl_Z8k7uOXM5wkkHc

Please note that not all of the instruments in this playlist are offered to beginners, but are available to transfer to later. The instruments we offer to beginners in band are flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. Instruments of the orchestra are violin, viola, and cello.

Keep your eyes open for more information once remote classes commence. An electronic enrollment survey will be made available soon, and lots of great information can be found on our Columbine Area Music website www.columbineareamusic.us

Please contact me with any questions you may have at eric.whaylen@jeffco.k12.co.us
